Why I Like Electronic Surplus

Many years ago, when I was a young man, I had a neighbor who was an electronics shop teacher at my local high school. He had the unique ability to be able to go purchase as a “donee” at the State Surplus facility. He took me in a few times. I could literally shop around for things. I had to be discreet about it, and tell him quietly what I wanted, then he’d put the items with his “purchase” and check out. I would pay him, and the money would go back to the school, and I’d get some cool stuff. Once I got a real cool war surplus instrument. It was to control missiles. It had some motors and lights, and servo sensors. It had a plastic map, with an actual groove scratched in two places. These were kind of like the scratch, or tracking groove in an audio record. One was for azimuth, one was for elevation. There was a couple of servo sensing needle heads that followed the grooves and gave a signal output for the missile. It was so cool to play with, and show my friends. It made noise, it moved, it was military. Once we bought some brand new ARC-5 military surplus radios, still in their original shipping metal drums. I was hoping one day to convert mine. Problem is I got the thing when I was too young, and too dumb. I took it apart. I took apart the missile control too. I gathered all kinds of tubes from every tossed out radio, and TV in the neighborhood. We bought a military High Voltage Infrared night vision instrument. We set it up in the school auditorium, and had kids hide in the darkened seat area. It was I’m sure one of the first ones made.

After High School. I went to basic training for the Army, then back home for a job. I worked in a Mom & Pop electronic parts distributor for 30 years. I lived and loved parts. I went from tubes to Ics, and all in-between. There was this old guy “Ben” who had a surplus electronic parts place in town. He’d call, us in sales, when he had a customer. He’s ask “how much is this Sprague ___ capacitor? I’d quote him $2.00. He’d yell at me “$3.00!” as he was hanging up the phone. I’m sure he’d sell it for somewhere in the range we were talking. We also had a large tube surplus dealer for many years in our town. He kew everything about tubes. He sold tons of them. I’ve heard that some mentioned his place as being “acres of glass”

I quit my job, and found some great sources for surplus parts. You will only find a small amount here, as we start to rebuild and remake this website.

i do still buy lots of stuff. Let us know if you hear of any sweet deals!

Our Warehouse

We have a large warehouse full of stuff. We have thousands of books on technology and various topics (see our links page). We have a large collection (many museum quality) of mineral specimens. We have, I am guessing, 20,000 to 50,000 old radio electron tubes. There’s lots of early transistor and antique radios. Lots of old vintage pocket calculators. I also have millions of pieces of electronic parts with a consignment distributor off site, (because I had no room). If you know anyone who needs a great consignment distributor for electronic parts, have them call me. They do a great job. We have radio parts. We have test equipment. We’ve got a large quantity of industrial equipment, components, and supplies. We have a pretty interesting assortment of antiques. Many of the items in the inventory I have no idea what they are or what they do! I just like surplus! I have some great sources, and suppliers.

The message here is, keep watching! And watch my ebay listings! (see link to your left <---)As I get a chance, I will be listing more and more items. (Unless I can sell my entire company to a young enthused entrepreneur!

We’ve Changed our Website!

Those who have been here before will notice a few new changes. First of all we have added this blog! This gives us a chance to tell our customers and clients what we are doing. We also have combined our efforts for both of our electronic surplus sites: wowsurplus.com and electronicpartsupply.com We have several followers and sites linking to both sites. We are owned by the same owners, and both are selling surplus. We figure this way we can do a better job for both by focusing on finding great stuff and listing it on one site. Hopefully you will check back and notice how we are adding new items for sale in all sorts of interesting areas. Keep watching
